has-pale-cyan-blue-background-color has-background\">Serbian Church Singing in the Phonoarchive of the Institute of Musicology SASA<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the Phonoarchive of the Institute of Musicology SASA there is a rich collection of archival recordings of church music, within which recordings of traditional Serbian church singing, represented in the liturgical practice of the Serbian Orthodox Church, have a special place. Here we present a selection of recordings made in monasteries in Serbia between 1968 and 1985, during the musicological field research conducted by Dr Dimitrije Stefanovi\u0107 and Dr Danica Petrovi\u0107. The recordings come from twenty-two monasteries. The grouping was done according to the place of origin, and within the sound image of each monastery, the order is chronological. Friday (1973); Diocese of Ni\u0161: Holy Covering of the Virgin, near \u0110unis (1975); Diocese of Valjevo: \u0106elije (Cells) (1968, 1982); Eparchy of Ra\u0161ka-Prizren: Sopo\u0107ani (1968), Devi\u010d (1968).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Part of the material consists of recordings from the worship service &#8211; from the evening and morning services, i.e. holiday vigils, Liturgy, commemoration of the deceased (parastos\/opelo), ceremony of cutting the celebratory cake. From the integrally recorded services, we made a selection of songs that represent the characteristics of the liturgical repertoire and the chants themselves, as well as the performance style of the singers. The second type of recording contains a series of separate songs, recorded for research purposes, according to the chanting of selected monks, in different monasteries. As an authentic testimony, a kind of fragment of a bygone era, the entirety of this sound material confirms that Serbian church singing was carefully nurtured among monastery brethren in a period that was not at all favourable to church art. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Metadata on sound recordings is somewhat heterogeneous, given the different occasions and conceptions of recording. Along with the records of the service, the following are indicated: the name of the monastery, date, information about the service\/holiday, the name of the abbot of the monastery and the priest, as well as the names of the nuns (services were recorded mostly in female monasteries). Along with the other recordings, the following are listed: name of the monastery, date (sometimes just the year), names of singers\/singers and the monastery where they originally resided.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the work on this archival sound material, we used both digitized versions of the records originally made with a tape recorder and original recordings on audio cassettes.
